Eguren Ugarte

Second stop of the day was Eguren Ugarte. This has been a winery in the same family since 1850. The current owner is now 85. All of the cave you see were hand dug by him. They served not only as storage places but also gathering places. Each separate niche is allocated to a family who had private wines stored they. Some have not been touched for over 50 years. The property also houses a hotel and restaurant. We sampled the wines cincuenta, aspaldi, eguren, and Mercedes, named for his wife. Full and rich bodies light tannins. Most can drink now or lay down for a few years. Balanced with right acidity to offset the tannins. Beautiful floral nose with hints of violets.  They also treated us to lunch, chorizo chicos, sausage and bean soup sauteed mushrooms and lamb chops served with an 08 Aspaldi reserve.
